Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the celebrated German baritone once called the most influential singer of the 20th century, has died at the age of 86.
He came to prominence after the Second World War and was quickly recognized as one of the finest vocalists of his generation. In 1962, Benjamin Britten personally asked him to perform the first performance of his War Requiem. The premiere was held at the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral, which had been destroyed by bombing in 1940.
