Harlem DJ and hip-hop artist E-Z Rock, who had a chart-topping 1988 collaboration with rapper Rob Bass on "It Takes Two," has died at the age of 46.
It Takes Two enjoyed renewed popularity when it was revived by later generations of hip-hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown and Briton Maxsta. Bryce and Base, whose real name was Robert Ginyard, met in the hallways of high school and released their first single, "DJ Interview," in 1986 and signed to Profile Records a year later. It was followed by "It Takes Two," which was accompanied by a video set between a record store and the street.
The song, which was partly based on Lyn Collins and James Brown's 1972 song "Think (About It)", initially became a local hit, then peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over a million copies.
After E-Z Rock left the band, Rob Base went on to a less successful solo career, releasing The Incredible Base in 1989, which did not sell as well as It Takes Two, but did manage to chart with the song "Turn It Out (Go Base)". In 1994, the band made a brief, unsuccessful comeback with Break of Dawn.
