Življenje Sama Bowdena se spremeni v pekel, ko se iz zapora vrne zločinec Max, odločen, da se bo mašč.

Max Cady pa je potetoviran psihopatski posiljec, ki nenehno kadi cigaro in citira Sveto pismo. Kaj imata skupnega? Pred 14 leti je bil Sam dodeljen za Maxovega zagovornika na sojenju za posilstvo in naredil je hudo napako – svojemu nepismenemu varovancu je zamolčal dokument, ki bi lahko privedel do oprostilne sodbe. Zdaj je pretkani, s Svetim pismom obsedeni Cady prišel iz zapora in odločen je, da Samu Bowdenu in njegovi družini pokaže, kaj pomeni izguba.

Gre za originalni film, po katerem je Martin Scorsese leta 1991 posnel remake z Robertom DeNirom in Nickom Noltejem.
