Njena babica Della Monroe Grainger, pa jo je kasneje krstila kot Norma Jeane Baker.
Leta 1942 se je poročila z Jimom Doughertyjem, leta 1946 se je ločila od njega.
Leta 1956 se je poročila z Arthurjem Millerjem ter se od njega ločila pet let kasneje.
Njeni vročekrvni nastopi, privlačen izgled in skrivnostna smrt so jo naredili za nesmrten seks simbol in kasneje pop ikono dvajsetega stoletja.
Marilyn Monroe je umrla 5. avgusta 1962. Uradni vzrok smrti je bila prevelika doza uspavalnih sredstev, čeprav resnica verjetno nikoli ne bo razjasnjena. Njene domnevne afere s predsednikom Johnom F. Kennedyjem in njegovim bratom Robertom so bile središče teorij glede dogodkov, ki so vodili v njeno smrt.
