Turkish riot police fired rubber bullets and pepper gas in clashes with demonstrators during a massive protest in Istanbul which drew hundreds of thousands of people to protest the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the city’s mayor.
Defying a warning from President Erdogan that the country would not tolerate “street terrorism”, the opposition leader Ozgur Ozel said “300,000 people” had joined the protest.
